Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze what factors have significant effects on the existence or increase of depression, in particular the gender difference on the change of depression. In order to do this work, this study uses the data of Korea Welfare Panel Study collected by Koran Institute for Health and Social Affairs and the Social Welfare Research Center of Seoul National University in 2006 and 2009, respectively. That is, this study used the data of 10,225 persons answering all 11-item questions which are composed of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale.
From data analysis, this study found that the existence or increase of depression is strongly associated with the respondent¡¯s age, education, marriage status, the status change of labor market, income level, health level, family and social relations. In particularly, the existence or increase of depression is more critical to female than male. According to logistic regression on the existence or increase of the depression, the female respondents who were less educated and were divorced from or bereaved of their husbands tend to remain in the state of depression and become depressed. Also the female who were out of work or belonged to poor family tend to be depressed continuously. However, the health or family relationship factor is more significant to the male¡¯s depression than one of the female. From those findings, this study suggest some policy measures which can prevent women from depression.
